Manchester United have won only once in four Premier League games this season, and this represents their worst start in the competition in 33 years.

The pressure on Ruben Amorim is increasing by the minute, not only because of the results, but also his inexplicable selection calls every game.

Kobbie Mainoo is yet to start so far in the league, and despite injuries to Matheus Cunha and Mason Mount, the Englishman had to once again be content with a place on the bench in the Manchester derby.

The head coach has already revealed that he sees the England international as more of a No.8, which means the Carrington graduate will have to compete with skipper Bruno Fernandes for a place in the starting lineup.

Kobbie Mainoo dilemma

Under Erik ten Hag, the 20-year-old had proven his ability to play as a deep-lying playmaker, while also excelling for the national team in the same position in the Euros.

With Casemiro no longer the force he once was due to his age, and with Manuel Ugarte struggling, it seemed obvious that Amorim would turn to the wonderkid.

As a result of constant snubs, the midfielder has told his inner circle that he feels the Portuguese tactician does not rate him. This information comes courtesy of journalist Alex Crook of Talksport.

“The Kobbie Mainoo situation is infuriating. Because you go back to the 2024 FA Cup final, he scores in that game, he runs the midfield against Manchester City, United defy the odds and they win the FA Cup, it keeps Erik ten Hag in a job.

Amorim doesn’t rate him

“A few weeks later, he comes in and solves that No.6 issue that England had at the European Championships, he plays in the European Championship final.

“He’s been criminally underused by Ruben Amorim, and I speak to people close to Kobbie Mainoo and they say to me, ‘He doesn’t fancy him’, Kobbie believes the manager doesn’t have any faith in his ability.”

Which explains why Kobbie Mainoo was so keen to leave on loan in the summer, but INEOS did not want to lose him and insisted on him staying and proving Amorim wrong.

But with lack of chances, that has proven to be a lot more difficult than initially expected. Whether the under-fire head coach will finally turn to him in the game against Chelsea will be interesting to see.
