Toni Kroos ended his active career in the summer of 2024, but he has by no means let go of soccer. From Madrid, where he lives with his family and runs his own youth academy, the 35-year-old continues to keep a close eye on events on the big stages of Europe. FC Bayern is also regularly in the spotlight – the club where Kroos once matured into a professional and won his only treble in 2013 before moving to Real Madrid as world champion a year later
Kroos has never developed a particularly emotional relationship with Munich; his view of the record champions is sober, analytical and free of nostalgia, which is precisely why his statements carry weight when he makes public statements – such as in the podcast „Einfach mal Luppen“, which he runs together with his brother Felix
With regard to Harry Kane, Kroos left no room for doubt. For him, the Englishman is the Bundesliga’s next top scorer – in fact, he already is. „Harald will be top scorer. He already is,“ said Kroos with a wink, alluding to the Bayern striker’s enormous lead. Kane leads the scoring charts after 14 match days with 18 goals, a whopping ten goals ahead of his rivals Deniz Undav and Jonathan Burkardt
The fact that Kroos even jokingly asked whether the top scorer’s crown could come „in the winter“ shows how clearly he sees the situation. For the ex-Real star, Kane is not only statistically far ahead, but also in a category that sets him apart from all other attackers in the league
But Kroos went one step further. For him, Kane will not have to celebrate the top scorer’s crown alone. „He can also bring home the trophy straight away,“ said the former international, making it clear that he considers FC Bayern to be almost unassailable in the championship race
The facts prove him right. Munich are still unbeaten after 14 matchdays and have already built up a comfortable lead over RB Leipzig and Borussia Dortmund. Even the recent slip-up against Mainz 05 had no consequences, as their rivals also slipped up. For Kroos, this is a clear sign that the record champions‘ dominance this season can hardly be broken
However, his assessment is not entirely without qualification. With a wink, Kroos referred to Deniz Undav, who has been in strong form recently and scored numerous goals in a short space of time. However, he no longer sees any real tension in the title race as a result – more in the details than in the big picture.
