According to L'Équipe, Real Madrid's 1-1 draw at Girona on Friday ended amid anger after a late incident left Kylian Mbappé bleeding.
In the final seconds of normal time, Mbappé beat Vitor Reis, who, turning, caught him with an elbow to the face inside the box. The referee did not award a penalty and the VAR did not intervene.
Madrid coach Alvaro Arbeloa condemned the decision, insisting the foul was so obvious it could be seen from the Moon. He said it was a straightforward penalty and that he and others could not understand the call.
He also railed against the VAR, calling the situation incomprehensible at this level and arguing such actions should not be missed with current technology. He asked when the VAR actually steps in, then suggested it does so only when it suits.
The tone in local media was similarly fierce, with the club's channel linking the episode to the Negreira affair and calling it another refereeing scandal. The clip spread widely on social media, and some Barcelona supporters accepted that a penalty should have been given.
The outcome benefits Barcelona, who could move nine points clear with seven to play if they beat Espanyol in the derby. Madrid now turn to Wednesday's Champions League quarter-final second leg against Bayern Munich.
