Lee Cattermole has been appointed Gateshead’s first-team manager on a two-year deal, the club confirmed. The 38-year-old takes his first senior job at the International Stadium.

The former Sunderland and Middlesbrough midfielder made 272 Premier League appearances across the Black Cats, Boro and Wigan. He ended his playing career with VVV-Venlo in 2020 before moving into coaching.

Cattermole has since worked in Middlesbrough’s academy, and on first-team staffs at Bristol Rovers and Burnley. He also coached Northern Ireland’s Under-17s, and narrowly missed out on the Hartlepool United job last month.

He will work alongside Ben Clark, who recently signed a long-term deal to continue as Gateshead’s first-team coach.

Cattermole said he is excited by the opportunity and has long been clear he wants to manage. He stressed his vision will take time, with clear standards set and a desire to build on Gateshead’s identity together.

Interim chairman Graham Wood said appointing a manager was his immediate priority and Cattermole was the standout candidate among applicants. After meetings with the new boss and his agent, terms were agreed and he starts immediately. Wood highlighted Cattermole’s experience of over 250 Premier League games and learning under Gareth Southgate and Martin O’Neill.
