Leeds are looking at Levante forward Carlos Espi for their striker shortlist, a development that could squeeze Joel Piroe’s minutes despite his wish to stay.

According to Leedsunited.news, Espi, 21, has been added to Leeds’ shortlist after winning La Liga’s Young Player of the Season in 2025-26. He scored 13 in 27 for Levante, including 11 in 25 league games, and has Europe watching.

With Calvert-Lewin first choice and Nmecha ahead of Piroe, any new striker this summer will end the Dutchman’s hopes of game time. The links emerge days after he said he would fight for his place.

The £16m signing from Swansea did not score or assist in the Premier League last season. He started only the first two matches, then featured from the bench.

He expects to learn more about his future in pre-season. He missed a penalty against Wrexham before opening Leeds’ account.

Leeds shifted from patient, possession play to set-piece prowess last season, a template they would be right to keep to avoid second-season syndrome. Espi appears a fit for that approach.

Per 90 minutes last season in their respective leagues, Espi won 56.1% of his aerial duels, a higher rate than Calvert-Lewin, who was below 50%.

Even without a deal, the interest underlines a push to reinforce up front. If Leeds can land him for £21m, it would be a significant statement.
