With Régis Le Bris' side visiting Elland Road on Tuesday night, Sunderland Echo picks out five memorable Leeds United v Sunderland meetings.
Sunderland 2-0 Leeds United, 28 December 1963. Two days after a 1-1 draw, more than 55,000 packed Roker Park to see the Black Cats beat the Second Division leaders. After one win in five, Alan Brown's team found form.
Leeds United 0-1 Sunderland, 5 May 1973. After knocking out Notts County, Reading, Manchester City, Luton and Arsenal, the Second Division underdogs triumphed at Wembley. Ian Porterfield's 32nd-minute strike and Jimmy Montgomery's double save sealed a second FA Cup.
Sunderland 4-2 Leeds United, 11 January 1986. Lawrie McMenemy's reign had yielded only eight wins from 25 Second Division games and four without victory against Leeds. Nick Pickering hit a hat-trick and Ian Wallace added a second-half goal.
Leeds United 0-3 Sunderland, 13 September 2006. Early in Roy Keane's tenure, after Niall Quinn stepped down following four straight defeats, Sunderland won at Elland Road. Liam Miller, Graham Kavanagh and Stephen Elliot scored against Kevin Blackwell's side, who had lost the previous season's play-off final.
Sunderland 2-2 Leeds United, 4 October 2024. In a high-stakes early-season top-of-the-table clash, Chris Rigg put Sunderland ahead before Joël Piroe and Junior Firpo turned it around. In stoppage time, Alan Browne glanced Anthony Patterson's free-kick towards goal and Illan Meslier let it slip through his legs, sparking wild celebrations.
