Sunderland stayed within sight of the top eight with a 1-1 draw at Bournemouth, and, according to Sunderland Echo, Opta’s latest projection sets out where clubs could finish this season.
Regis Le Bris’ side, seeking a response to last weekend’s 3-1 home loss to Fulham, struck first when Eliezer Mayenda netted with 18 minutes played. Evanilson equalised midway through the second half.
The point leaves the Black Cats six points off the European places, so hopes of a first continental campaign since 1973 remain intact. Their form needs sharpening, with one win in the last 12, that sole victory coming against relegation-threatened Burnley.
Opta’s predicted final table has Arsenal first on 81.73 points, Manchester City second with 77.24, Aston Villa third on 67.08 and Liverpool fourth with 65.52. It projects Sunderland 13th on 48.08, Bournemouth eighth with 52.60 and Leeds 15th on 44.13. The model places West Ham 18th on 35.20, Burnley 19th with 27.83 and Wolverhampton Wanderers 20th on 22.10.
Le Bris called it a good point after three defeats, describing the league as relentless and Bournemouth as an intense, duel-driven side. He praised character, resilience and togetherness, admitted there was probably not enough quality to score again, and said he was especially happy with the team spirit.
