Glen Kamara has emerged as a January transfer target for both Ipswich and Leicester

Leicester City and Ipswich Town are both considering a move for Stade Rennais midfielder Glen Kamara in the January transfer window at the start of 2026.

According to Foot Mercato, the two Championship sides are considering an approach for the out of favour Finland international, having previously showed interest in him.

The 29-year-old previously helped Leeds United reach the play-off final, featuring 37 times in the second tier as Daniel Farke’s team finished third in the table in 2024.

Following their defeat to Southampton at Wembley, Kamara made the move to Rennes, but a lack of game time in the 2024/25 campaign led to him going out on loan to Saudi Arabian side Al-Shabab.

The 70-cap Finland midfielder has struggled for regular minutes in France, making 13 league appearances, all of which came in the first half of the previous campaign.

Leicester and Ipswich are reportedly interested in Kamara amid his lack of minutes in Ligue 1 this campaign.

However, they both face competition from Rennes’ divisional rivals Nice, who are also eyeing a deal for the ex-Leeds and Rangers player.

It is understood that Kamara is available, with an asking price of €3 million (£2.6 million) set going into the January market, having signed him in the summer of 2024 for a figure that was just less than €10 million, as per the BBC.

Nice made an approach in the summer window, but were unable to strike a deal, which could open the door for a return back to England for the midfielder.

It’s believed that Rennes could also be open to a loan deal with an option to buy clause attached, with Kamara considered surplus to requirements.

The 29-year-old has a contract with the French club until the summer of 2028, but has not played in Ligue 1 at all this season.

Leicester and Ipswich are both targeting promotion back to the Premier League at the first attempt this campaign, with the former third in the table and the latter sitting ninth, albeit with a game in hand.

Loan option may be the best route for Glen Kamara signing for Ipswich Town and Leicester City

Ipswich and Leicester both have solid options in midfield that Kamara would be competing against for game-time if he joined.

The Finn does have a proven track record at this level, but his lack of minutes since coming back to European football earlier this year is a concern.

A permanent signing could be risky, as there’s a chance he may not be able to reach his previous best level anymore, so a loan with a buy clause could be the right move for all parties in January.

There’s no doubt that a fully firing Kamara has potential to be a strong addition at any Championship side, but it remains to be seen whether that same player is still there given how far down the pecking order he is at Rennes.
