Saturday’s FA Cup schedule will be completed by an all-Premier League fourth-round tie between Liverpool host Brighton and Hove Albion.
The Reds last won the competition in 2021-22 but suffered an upset at this stage last season when losing 1-0 to then Championship strugglers Plymouth. Arne Slot’s team began their latest Wembley bid with a 4-1 home win over League One Barnsley in the third round.
Brighton are eight places behind sixth-placed Liverpool in the Premier League this season but made an impressive start to their FA Cup campaign with a 2-1 away win over Manchester United.
The game at Anfield kicks off at 8pm on Saturday February 14th and will be shown live on TNT Sports 1, TNT Sports Ultimate and discovery+.
Liverpool (4-2-3-1): Mamardashvili; Szoboszlai, Gomez, Konate, Kerkez; Gravenberch, Jones; Salah, Wirtz, Chiesa; Gakpo
Liverpool manager Arne Slot has plenty of decisions to make ahead of the tie with Brighton. The cup fixture provides an opportunity to perhaps rest some of his first-choice players, but the standard of opposition means not too many liberties can be taken.
Then again, with a rare eight-day break until the next Premier League game against Nottingham Forest, there is no need to make changes for the sake of it.
One definite absentee is Wataru Endo. The midfielder filled in at right-back at Sunderland on Wednesday but was carried off with a serious foot injury.
Dominik Szoboszlai can return after missing the midweek match due to suspension and may fill the cursed right-back role.
The rest of Liverpool’s potential changes depend mostly on how strong Slot wants his side to be.
Joe Gomez returned from injury off the bench at Sunderland and he could start in defence to give a rest to either Virgil van Dijk or Ibrahima Konate, while Milos Kerkez may return at left-back in place of Andy Robertson.
Curtis Jones may come in for Alexis Mac Allister or Ryan Gravenberch in midfield, with Federico Chiesa the likely alternative if Florian Wirtz is rested.
Cody Gakpo could get the start up front in place of Hugo Ekitike, while Rio Ngumoha is an alternative if Mohamed Salah sits out.Alexander Isak, Giovanni Leoni, Jeremie Frimpong and Conor Bradley are still unavailable due to injuries.
Liverpool’s right-back position has been an ongoing problem this season and the latest blow came when midfielder Wataru Endo helped out there at Sunderland on Wednesday only to be carried off on a stretcher after 69 minutes.
The most obvious candidate to fill the role against Brighton is Dominik Szoboszlai, who was suspended for the Stadium of Light contest, although his immense talent is probably better used in a more advanced position.
However, with Conor Bradley out for the season and Jeremie Frimpong still sidelined, the cupboard is pretty bare on the right side of Slot’s defence. Another emergency move could be to play Milos Kerkez at left-back and switch Andy Robertson to the right.
The Liverpool manager bemoaned his team’s right-back luck when discussing Endo’s injury after the win over the Black Cats.
“It’s a serious one. How serious we don’t know yet but it doesn’t look good,” said Slot.
“I assume he will be out for a long, long time. What is long, it is difficult to say at this moment but you can hardly believe what this right full-back position brings us this season.”
