Two of European football’s most decorated clubs clash at Anfield on Tuesday as Liverpool host Real Madrid in a blockbuster Champions League tie.
The Reds ended a shocking four-game losing streak at the weekend. However, they now face a formidable Madrid side, managed by former Red Xabi Alonso, that has won 13 of their 14 games this season and boasts a perfect record in Europe.
Liverpool manager Arne Slot continues to navigate a significant injury crisis. Unfortunately, the team remains without several key players. For instance, Alisson Becker (hamstring), Alexander Isak (groin), and Jeremie Frimpong are all still unavailable. However, there is some positive news. Midfielder Curtis Jones has returned to training after missing the last two games. Furthermore, Ryan Gravenberch made a welcome return at the weekend. He impressively capped his recovery from an ankle injury with a goal against Aston Villa.
Xabi Alonso returns to Anfield facing a defensive crisis. Specifically, he is without the injured Antonio Rudiger (muscular) and Dani Carvajal (knee). Furthermore, David Alaba remains a major doubt after missing the last three games with a calf injury. On a more positive note, Trent Alexander-Arnold has recovered from his hamstring injury. The former Liverpool vice-captain is now set for an emotional return. His controversial departure for Madrid in the summer makes this a highly anticipated event.
Liverpool’s 2-0 win over Aston Villa on Saturday was a vital result. Crucially, it ended a disastrous run of four straight league defeats. Before that win, they had lost six of their last seven games in all competitions. Their Champions League form, however, has been inconsistent (W2, L1). As a result, they currently sit 10th in the league stage table.
Real Madrid, in contrast, are in imperious form. Their 4-0 hammering of Valencia at the weekend marked their 13th win in 14 matches this season. In addition, they have a 100% record in the Champions League. They have won all three of their opening fixtures. This strong start leaves them fifth in the table on goal difference.
Possible Liverpool starting XI: Mamardashvili; Bradley, Konaté, Van Dijk, Robertson; Gravenberch, Mac Allister; Salah, Szoboszlai, Gakpo; Ekitike
Possible Real Madrid starting XI: Courtois; Alexander-Arnold, Militao, Huijsen, Carreras; Tchouameni, Camavinga; Guler, Bellingham, Vinicius Junior; Mbappe.
