El Periódico Mediterráneo reports that a dramatic World Cup night featured four games. Qatar made history under Julen Lopetegui, Brazil were checked by Morocco, Scotland went top and Australia stunned Türkiye.

Switzerland had 68 per cent of the ball and led via an Embolo penalty on 17 minutes. Khoukhi headed in at 90+4 to level it. It is Qatar’s first World Cup point, and Lopetegui will sleep easier.

Morocco led Brazil when Saibari scored on 21 minutes from a Brahim Díaz pass. Vinicius levelled on 32. Brazil controlled possession but not the scoreline, and Alisson made two stoppage-time saves to avert defeat in Carlo Ancelotti’s debut.

John McGinn’s finish gave Scotland a 1-0 win over Haiti and first place in Group C. Haiti, back at a World Cup after 52 years, almost levelled when Pierrot’s 84th-minute header flashed past the post.

Australia beat Türkiye 2-0, a disappointing opener. Arda Güler had a tough debut, short of his best.

Sunday’s card has Germany v Curaçao in Houston at 19:00 in Group E, and the Netherlands v Japan in Dallas at 22:00 in Group F, the pick of the day. Ivory Coast face Ecuador in Philadelphia at 01:00 in Group E, then Sweden meet Tunisia in Monterrey at 04:00 in Group F.

On Monday, Spain open against Cabo Verde in Atlanta at 18:00.
