According to L'Équipe, Luis Enrique inaugurated a green beach named in his honour in his hometown of Gijon, Spain, on Monday, the PSG head coach becoming visibly emotional as he spoke about his family.
Recent months have been laden with emotion for him, from a PSG supporters’ tifo paying tribute to his daughter Xana, who died of cancer at the age of nine, to the club’s second star. Seeing his name there brought tears.
He reflected that he left Gijon more than 30 years ago but has returned every year, stressing his attachment to his birthplace and calling the gesture exceptional.
He said the plaque makes him think not of himself but of his parents, who left their own hometown to settle in Gijon, describing them as his role models past, present and future.
He struggled to hold back when speaking about the family he has built with his wife over the last 30 years. He said they have formed a wonderful family with three children, Pacho, Sira and Xana, and was especially moved when naming Xana.
