According to Glorioso 1904, former Benfica captain Luisão criticised the club on social media, using Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City farewell as a reference and suggesting he felt forgotten after retiring.
The 45-year-old wrote that football is always about passion and shared Guardiola’s goodbye video to frame his own experience at Benfica. He said he felt sad that after doing so much it seemed to mean nothing.
He implied the club had not given him due credit despite years as captain and multiple trophies, and he had already raised concerns over the Gianluca Prestianni case in earlier posts.
The Brazilian represented Benfica from September 2003 to June 2018, wearing the number four, then ended his playing career. His farewell game at Estádio da Luz included an on-pitch ceremony attended by several club figures.
Guardiola, like Bernardo Silva and John Stones, has announced his departure from Manchester City. Although he has one year left on his contract, he believes his cycle at the English club has ended. His next step is unknown.
