Manchester City secured a 2-0 win over Galatasaray in their final UEFA Champions League league-phase clash at Etihad Stadium on Wednesday evening.
City got off to a promising start as Rayan Ait-Nouri crossed the ball for the unmarked Erling Haaland, who headed wide.
Haaland broke the deadlock in the 10th minute, dinking the ball over goalkeeper Ugurcan Cakir, netting his first goal from open play in nine games.
Pushing for the second goal, Bernardo Silva squared to Nico O’Reilly, but Cakir made a brilliant save to keep out his effort.
Moments later, Gianluigi Donnarumma was called into action for the first time, denying Victor Osimhen from breaching his goal.
Rayan Cherki then went to the other end to make it 2-0, side-footing Jeremy Doku’s pass into the bottom-left corner.
Phil Foden squandered a golden chance to add to the Cityzens’ advantage on the stroke of half-time, blazing over the bar from inside the box.
The first chance of the second period fell to Omar Marmoush as the Egyptian timed his run to latch onto a pass, but could only hit straight at Cakir.
The visitors responded with a chance of their own, as Osimhen’s first-time shot was saved by Donnarumma.
Moments later, City were on the attack again, with Ait-Nouri poking a shot at goal, but Cakir was equal to the task.
Galatasaray ended the game strongly, but Donnarumma stood tall in goal to preserve his clean sheet.
With the result, City booked automatic progression to the round of 16, finishing eighth in the standings.
