Officials at Manchester City remain determined to tie Rodri down to a new contract at the Etihad Stadium despite the Spaniard’s most recent comments on his future.
The 29-year-old is currently away on international duty with Spain as he and his teammates begin preparations for the summer’s FIFA World Cup across the Atlantic, and national media have taken the opportunity to quiz Rodri on his future.
As is usually the case, the Manchester City superstar finds himself at the centre of reports linking him with transfer interest from Real Madrid, and the prospect of returning to the Spanish capital seven years on from leaving Atletico for the Etihad Stadium.
“There are more players who have taken that path. Not directly, but over time. You can’t turn down the best clubs in the world,” Rodri responded when asked whether his history with the red and white side of the city would affects a potential move to the Bernabeu.
“I have one year remaining on my contract,” Rodri continued, pointing towards his existing and active agreement at the Etihad Stadium. “There will be a point when we will have to sit down and talk and have a dialogue.”
And now, according to Sky Sports News’ Lyall Thomas, Manchester City still want Rodri to stay and agree a new contract at the club, with just 12 months remaining on his existing deal by the time the ongoing season concludes.
From the viewpoint of Manchester City, they are unlikely to attempt to stand in the player’s way should he wish to take on a new direction in his top-level playing career, but would aim for a significant transfer fee despite his contractual picture by the time the summer arrives.
Some supporters have already indicated a desire to see Rodri sold for around £65 million, should Real Madrid come calling and the player wanting to move, despite the club usually valuing a player of his quality significantly higher when tied to a healthier contract.
As for how the club would go about replacing a player of Rodri’s stature, many will take confidence from the performances of Nico Gonzalez earlier in the campaign, who stood in for his defensive midfield teammate whilst he recovered from a hamstring problem.
But additional work in terms of replacing Rodri will only add to a summer that is already expected to bring about existing complications, with Bernardo Silva expected to leave on a free transfer and Pep Guardiola’s own future in doubt beyond the current campaign.
