Pep Guardiola’s side looking to extend winning record at inaugural tournament
Manchester City take on Al Ain tonight as they look to secure a second win from two group games at the Club World Cup.
City face the UAE outfit at the Mercedes-Benz Arena in Atlanta, Georgia, following on from their 2-0 victory over Wydad AC in their opener in Philadelphia.
Phil Foden and Jeremy Doku were on target for the Citizens, while Rayan Cherki and Tijjani Reijnders, two of their new summer signings, were given debuts.
Reijnders played the full 90 minutes against the Moroccan side, while Cherki was withdrawn on the hour, replaced by Erling Haaland as Omar Marmoush shifted back into one of the free eight roles.
Rayan Ait-Nouri, the left-back signed from Wolves, did not feature, with Nico O’Reilly given the nod, although Guardiola has emphasised that every single one of his players will play at this tournament.
The Spaniard said that he would be managing Rodri’s minutes very caerefully, with the Ballon D’Or winner still easing back into match action following his ACL injury that he sustained against Arsenal last year.
Haaland did not start against Wydad, but could here to gain match sharpness, as Guardiola will have one eye on the final group game against Juventus, which could be pivotal in deciding who the Premier League side face in the knockout stages.
Rico Lewis, who saw red against Wydad, will be suspended, and with Kyle Walker not included in the tournament squad, one can expect Matheus Nunes to deputise at right-back, similar to what he did in the regular season.
Jack Grealish is also not involved, with his future at the Etihad Stadium up in the air.
Predicted Man City XI: Ederson; Nunes, Akanji, Dias, Ait-Nouri; Reijnders, Silva, Cherki; Foden, Haaland, Doku
Suspended: Lewis
Injured: Kovacic
Not in squad: Walker, McAtee, Grealish, Phillips
Time and date: 2am BST, MondayJune 23, 2025
Venue: Mercedes-Benz Arena, Atlanta, Georgia
TV channel: The match will be shown in the UK on Channel 5 and DAZN.
