Manchester United are considering the possibility of signing a new centre-back this summer.

There are doubts over Matthijs de Ligt and Lisandro Martinez’s fitness levels after injury-hit campaigns, while Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven are still developing.

United recruitment staff reportedly believe a centre-back is required to cope with the load of domestic and European football next season.

The Athletic claims United are considering a move for a left-footed centre-back, with Tottenham Hotspur’s Micky van de Ven emerging as a target.

The 25-year-old has also been linked with Liverpool, though a move this summer is now unlikely, following Ibrahima Konate’s imminent contract extension.

The Dutch centre-back has had a difficult campaign, but has the qualities to be a good signing for United.

His speed and tackling ability make him well-suited with a high defensive line. He ranks seventh for top speed in the UEFA Champions League this season.

Van de Ven ranks first for accurate passes and second for accurate long passes per game among the Spurs’ squad in the Premier League, highlighting his ball-playing ability.

The Dutchman also offers an attacking threat, having scored seven goals across all competitions, higher than any United defender.

He has also overcome his previous injury concerns, missing just one game due to an injury this term.

However, his discipline is questionable, having received eight yellow cards and one red card in the league this season.

Tottenham are reportedly planning to extend his contract, which currently expires in 2029. They placed a £100 million transfer fee on him in January, indicating their reluctance to sell.

United are unlikely to sign Van de Ven, due his potential price tag. They could explore the market for cheaper alternatives.
