Man United are reportedly the frontrunners to complete the capture of Wolves star Matheus Cunha in the summer transfer window.

The Brazil international’s future has been the subject of intense speculation following a spectacular campaign in the Premier League.

Cunha has scored 14 goals and provided four assists to help Wolves avoid the drop this season. He has also scored twice in this year’s FA Cup.

Arsenal, Nottingham Forest and Tottenham Hotspur have also been linked with a move for the attacker, but the Red Devils are said to be “leading the race” for his signature.

Fabrizio Romano claims that “negotiations are ongoing” between Cunha and Man United and personal terms are being “discussed”. There are “good feelings after initial contacts” between the two parties.

United are “aware” that more clubs are “keen” on signing the 25-year-old to add goals to their flailing attack. The club has scored just 38 goals in 35 Premier League games this term, leaving them 14th in the table.

Cunha turned down interest from clubs in the January transfer window to commit his future to Wolves and their fight against relegation.

The Midlands outfit convinced their star player to sign a new deal in February, which included a release of around £62.5 million.

Cunha signalled his intention to leave Wolves in an interview with the Guardian in March. “Now we’re close to achieving our goal [of staying up]…I’ve made it clear that I need to take the next step,” he said. “I want to fight for titles, for big things. I have potential.”

The former Atletico Madrid player drew criticism earlier this month after he posted a cryptic message on Instagram, which read: “Time to be happy. I will follow my dreams, not yours. So stay cool.”

The post was quickly deleted, but screenshots were shared online, drawing the ire of supporters. Cunha hit back, responding to a fan account: “Do you know what you want?

“For people to not like me here, unfortunately I’m going to the field to solve the problem of your favourite club. I’m not here looking for alternatives to be someone important.

“Fans root for their own, they don’t create misfortunes all the time.”
