While Manchester City have been listed among 10 clubs interested in Manchester United’s Kobbie Mainoo, Etihad Stadium admiration is said to have now cooled.
Despite his meteoric rise at Old Trafford, the 20-year-old midfielder’s situation has grown increasingly uncertain in recent months with game time dropping under Ruben Amorim, and contract talks reportedly stalling.
The youngster’s representatives are believed to have already explored the idea of a move to guarantee regular football, and interest has naturally followed from some of the continent’s top sides.
Manchester City’s recruitment department have long monitored emerging English midfielders as part of their strategy to maintain domestic core depth, but the focus has now shifted elsewhere. The Premier League giants may prioritise reinforcements in other areas of the pitch ahead of 2026, while Pep Guardiola remains well-stocked in central options.
Mainoo’s situation remains an intriguing story however as the teenager weighs up his next steps amid uncertainty at Old Trafford. His desire for regular first-team minutes could yet force United’s hand, especially with external pressure building.
According to The Daily Briefing’s Mark Brus, Manchester City are among a list of 10 clubs with a certain degree of interest in the services of Manchester United and England international midfielder, Kobbie Mainoo.
The report insists that while there is strong and concrete interest from Serie A champions Napoli, who wanted the Old Trafford starlet in the last summer market and are still believed to be leading the race for the player, a further nine clubs are deemed interested.
In addition to Manchester City and Napoli, the other clubs noted within the report are Chelsea, Tottenham, Newcastle United, Leeds United, Everton, Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Atletico Madrid.
While City are listed, it is noted that interest from the Etihad Stadium has cooled, along with the looks conveyed from those at St James’ Park.
Kobbie Mainoo’s current Manchester United contract runs until the summer of 2027, with the option of a further year, but renewed talks over improved terms have been delayed amid the club’s tighter wage structure.
Should no agreement be reached by next summer concerning all parties, reports elsewhere have indicated that Manchester United may reluctantly consider offers in the region of £70 million – a staggering price tag, but a reflection of the player’s high ceiling.
For City, any faint admiration now appears to be limited to general monitoring rather than active pursuit. City’s focus is expected to remain internal, with academy graduates continuing to be integrated and senior midfield targets assessed in line with future tactical demands.
