Manchester City’s summer rebuild and next season’s chances of success

Manchester City’s disappointing exit from the 2025/26 Champions League on Tuesday night raised inevitable questions about Pep Guardiola’s future as manager. A 5-1 aggregate defeat against Real Madrid in the round of 16 was a damaging result for a club with ambitions of being the dominant force in European football.

Manchester City have won just one Champions League title under Guardiola. In some sections that is considered a disappointing return but that discounts the fact that City have been close to winning the competition on several occasions under Guardiola.

Pep Guardiola appears to be up for the fight.

Although the Spaniard has just 15 months remaining on his contract, he seemed to have an eye on long-term matters in the aftermath of City’s defeat: “We have an extraordinary team, an extraordinary group of players – the future is bright.” Pep Guardiola told Amazon Prime Video.

Next season, we will be back. Still, we are not a complete team – that is the reality. I’ve been in a team at Manchester City when we were a team in all different aspects that define a team. And still, we are not a complete team.

As Manchester City navigates this period of transition, fans and punters alike are turning to trusted sources to track every move. Platforms serving as a global and local football news hub provide not just match updates and transfer rumours but also insightful betting previews, odds analysis, and tips for upcoming fixtures. Staying informed on squad changes, player form, and tactical setups is vital for both followers and those placing bets, making these hubs an essential part of the modern football experience.

Pep Guardiola himself was hyper aware of the importance of focusing on the immediate future, with City still involved in three competitions and the chance to win two or three trophies this season: “But in terms of that – we have a (Carabao Cup) final on Sunday, an FA Cup (quarter-final) against Liverpool, Premier League still to fight and finish well – and prepare good decisions for next season. And next season, we’ll be back in the Champions League.

Manchester City face a pivotal summer in the transfer market.

Uncertainty over Guardiola’s future is only part of the equation where City are concerned. Their squad is in the midst of a sizeable overhaul. Several long-serving players have left the Etihad Stadium recently and been replaced by a new wave of talent. Regardless of the money spent, transition is rarely seamless in football. That has stood out recently as Manchester City crashed out of the Champions League and lost ground to Arsenal in the Premier League title race.

Sporting director Hugo Viana has yet to prove he is a suitable replacement for Txiki Begiristain, but his previous work in Portugal, and last summer for City, and again in January when City signed Marc Guehi and Antoine Semenyo suggests that he is a shrewd and swift operator. While Hugo Viana has already overseen some significant changes, more will be on the cards this summer as City strive to add the finishing touches to their rebuild.

Hugo Viana is reportedly focused on two key areas for the summer transfer window – right back and central midfield. He will also likely need to replace captain Bernardo Silva, and with several players out of contract in 2027, work on future plans in strengthening the squad.

Nottingham Forest’s Elliott Anderson is a primary midfield target, although an asking price in excess of £80 million may force them to look elsewhere. Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali has emerged as another potential target for Manchester City. Whether or not the talented Italian midfielder is an alternative to Anderson or a separate transfer target isn’t yet clear. But what is clear is that City are eager to bolster their midfield.

Real Madrid defeat could be the catalyst for a brighter future.

Although City’s exit from the Champions League is disappointing, it is worth noting that the team could still win three trophies this season. If they win their game in hand and defeat Premier League title rivals Arsenal in April, there could potentially be just three points between them with a handful of games remaining. Success in the FA Cup and Carabao Cup would be welcome prizes, and give Manchester City the belief that they can embark on another period of dominance. What Manchester City’s Champions League defeat to Real Madrid showed was the areas of the City squad, and their play needs improving.

In terms of squad building cycles, they are a little behind Arsenal given that Mikel Arteta’s squad has been together for several season now. However, Manchester City look to be ahead of their other Premier League rivals. If Viana can fill the gaps in City’s squad this summer, they would be well-placed to mount a strong challenge on all fronts during the 2026/27 campaign.

Whether that would be enough to Pep Guardiola at the club beyond the end of his contract is anyone’s guess, but it could persuade him to stick around and lead the team City and he are building for at least another season and hopefully beyond.
