Onana was left out of the United squad for their trip to St James’ Park on Sunday, with back-up goalkeeper Altay Bayindir brought in for his first Premier League start.

Cameroon international Onana was at fault for both Lyon goals as United drew 2-2 in France in the Europa League on Thursday.

He allowed Thiago Almada’s free-kick to go straight in and then in the final minute of injury time he could not hold on to a shot and Rayan Cherki pounced on the rebound to equalise.

His latest errors came a day after he had been called “one of the worst goalkeepers” in United history by Nemanja Matic.

Onana has struggled at United since his £47million move to Old Trafford in 2023 and he has also been dealing with off-field issues, with his wife the victim of a street robbery last week that left the family needing 24-hour protection.

Explaining his decision to take Onana out of the firing line, Amorim said: “Of course, you have to see the context. It is a normal thing. Sometimes, you have to push the player to play again, sometimes you have to let him disconnect a little bit.

“Tomorrow, he will be in training to prepare for the next one [Lyon] so I felt that it was a good time for Andre to disconnect.”
