Few players coming through La Masia are regarded as highly as Marc Bernal, and Barcelona’s faith in the young midfielder appears to be matched by his commitment to the club.

According to Mundo Deportivo, Manchester United explored the possibility of signing Bernal while negotiations involving Marcus Rashford were still active.

The Premier League side reportedly viewed the teenager as one of the brightest prospects in European football and wanted him included as part of the discussions.

However, the idea never gained traction, as Barcelona had no intention of sacrificing one of their most promising academy graduates, while Bernal himself ruled out the possibility of moving to Old Trafford.

For the midfielder, the plan has always been to continue his development in Catalonia and earn a long-term place in the first team.

Hansi Flick’s message removed any doubts

Interest from clubs across Europe has become increasingly common as Bernal’s reputation continues to grow, but Barcelona’s coaching staff has consistently viewed him as part of the club’s future.

That confidence was reinforced in conversations between the midfielder and Hansi Flick, who reportedly told the youngster that he remains in his plans for the upcoming campaign.

Rather than worrying about speculation linking him with one of England’s biggest clubs, Bernal received direct reassurance from the manager who will decide his opportunities next season.

It also explains why reports suggesting a possible switch to Manchester United never progressed beyond initial discussions.

Barcelona’s position says as much as Bernal’s decision

The story is about more than one rejected approach.

In fact, Barcelona’s refusal to entertain the proposal shows how highly the club rates Bernal.

Even when Rashford remained a transfer target, the sporting department was unwilling to compromise on a player they believe can become a cornerstone of the midfield for years to come.

Hence, if he continues his development at the current rate, Barcelona may ultimately view rejecting Manchester United’s interest as one of the easiest transfer decisions they made this summer.
