Marcos Senna, a Villarreal great, has set out the route to victory at San Mamés. The Submarine return there on Sunday for matchday 31 at 21.00, and he recalls the club’s first LaLiga win at the ground.

According to El Periódico Mediterráneo, Senna remembered Pepe Reina being pivotal as Athletic laid siege, with an effort almost before the first minute, another soon after, three strikes against the woodwork and late penalty appeals.

The breakthrough came on 12 January 2003, matchday 17 of 2002/03, in Villarreal’s fourth top-flight visit to Bilbao after a 2-0 defeat in 1998/99 and draws of 1-1 in 2000/01 and 0-0 in 2001/02. Javier Farinós scored in minute five to seal a 1-0 win.

Senna joined from Sao Caetano in summer 2002 and spent 11 seasons to 2013, totalling 361 official matches, 33 goals and 19 assists, captaining the side. He did not lift trophies with Villarreal, yet he was central to the 2005/06 Champions League semi-final run and the 2007/08 LaLiga runners-up finish.

He gained Spanish nationality in 2005 and debuted in March 2006, earning 29 caps, and started throughout Spain’s Euro 2008 win under Luis Aragonés, beating Germany 1-0 in Vienna. After two seasons with New York Cosmos he retired in 2015 and returned as Villarreal ambassador and international relations staff, and he believes San Mamés demands suffering and clinical finishing if Villarreal are to take points on Sunday.
