Liverpool are halting their transfer plans on the back of a massive Arne Slot decision.
SportBild reports that Liverpool are halting their transfer plans. The Reds are linked with some of Europe's most exciting players but the Reds aren't in a position to commit to signings.
That's because they don't know what's to happen with Arne Slot. Now, this was written before Liverpool took on Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday evening and we'll see how the result affects things.
But it seems the club are somewhat accepting of the fact that they might need to replace Slot. Enough so that building a squad with him in mind isn't necessarily seen as the right move at the moment.
After all, Liverpool don't want to sign the players Slot wants if it turns out Xabi Alonso needs different players. That's the name the report mentions as potentially taking over - the Reds' former midfielder is 'ready' to take over, they say.
And so the waiting begins. Perhaps Slot turns things around and keeps his job. Or perhaps Liverpool need a new plan with their squad building.
For now, they will wait and see.
Recent Managerial Tenure and Real Madrid Exit
Xabi Alonso is currently a free agent after a turbulent 233-day spell as manager of Real Madrid, which ended with his dismissal in January 2026. Despite a historic unbeaten Bundesliga title win with Bayer Leverkusen in 2024, his time in Spain was marred by dressing room tension, particularly a fractured relationship with Vinicius Jr. following a controversial substitution during a Clasico victory over Barcelona. Alonso’s tenure concluded shortly after a 3–2 Supercopa loss to Barcelona and reported disagreements with Kylian Mbappe and club president Florentino Perez. Despite the "failed" stint in Madrid, his reputation as an elite tactical mind remains intact across Europe.
Future Speculation and Potential Return to Liverpool
As of April 8, 2026, Alonso has signalled his intent to return to management for the 2026–2027 season, sparking intense speculation about a return to Liverpool. With current Reds boss Arne Slot under significant pressure following a 4–0 FA Cup loss to Manchester City and a struggle to secure Champions League football, Alonso has emerged as the clear fan favourite to take over. While no formal negotiations have taken place, reports suggest mutual interest between Alonso and Fenway Sports Group. However, Liverpool faces competition from Manchester City, who view him as a primary candidate to succeed Pep Guardiola, and Chelsea, who continue to monitor his availability.
