Freiburg play a controlled, risk-averse style of football. Crosses are a trusted means of attack, while Noah Atubolu is the foundation of a solid defence.
Tactics
“We’re going up against a team with a good structure who contest a lot of second balls,” said Eintracht boss Dino Toppmöller in his press conference ahead of the meeting with Freiburg, who mostly set up in a 4-2-3-1 formation under their coach Julian Schuster. “They link up well in the opposition half, they’ve got good movement patterns in the final third and they put in lots of crosses, from set pieces too, which they attack with a lot of aggression.”
Much of Freiburg’s attacking play comes down the wings. With 16 crosses per game, Schuster’s men are well above the league average of 13. The average distance covered per match is 114.83 kilometres – a little under the league average of 117.81 km, while Frankfurt are among the highest runners with 119.43 kilometres on the clock. When it comes to possession, the Breisgau outfit are also mid-table with 49.1 percent possession. Their system of play is controlled and they don’t necessarily take big risks.
Absentees
Freiburg are without the services of Cyriaque Irié (malaria) and Daniel-Kofi Kyereh (knee).
For the Eagles, only Elias Baum is sidelined with a muscle injury.
One to watch: Noah Atubolu
Noah Atubolu is a product of the Freiburg academy who has mastered the step up to Bundesliga football with impressive maturity – already making 109 competitive appearances between the posts for the club. His journey began in 2015, when he joined the youth ranks at the age of 13.
Pushing through: Noah Atubolu.
The 23-year-old was promoted to number one after the departure of Mark Flekken in summer 2023. He made his Bundesliga debut on Matchday 1 of the 2023/24 season in a 2-1 win at Hoffenheim. Atubolo…
Runs and stats
Frankfurt are unbeaten in six games against Freiburg. Three points at Europa-Park Stadion on Sunday would mean three consecutive victories against SCF for the first time since the period between 2004 and 2010.
The Eagles have scored 10 away goals in the German top flight this season, the joint-best figure together with Bayern.
