Matheus Pereira return maintains Corinthians’ Brazilian title tradition

Corinthians have signed midfielder Matheus Pereira, a move that preserves the club’s long-running habit of carrying a Brazilian champion in the squad. According to Meu Timao, the streak began with the first national title in 1990.

With Maycon and Romero departing, the squad was set to lose that link. Pereira featured in one match of the 2015 campaign, so he is officially a champion from that season.

The only break came in 2005, then erased when the team won the league that year, making the entire squad champions. The baton later passed from 1990 winner Ronaldo Giovanelli, who stayed until 1998, to Cássio from 2015 to 2024, then to Maycon and Romero in 2025.

Corinthians are seven-time Brazilian champions and were especially dominant in the 2010s. Since the last league crown in 2017, maintaining the streak has grown harder, and Pereira is a rare member of the 2015 side still active.

The deal is a one-year loan with an option to buy at the end. Despite Fortaleza’s relegation, he was among their standouts. An academy product, he has played for Juventus and Empoli, Bordeaux, and Barcelona and Eibar before returning to Brazil.
