Matias Soulé has offered a seven-word update on his Roma future amid links with a £30million move to Sunderland. Asked if he expected to stay, the Argentine replied: “Will I stay? Honestly, I don’t know.”
He returned to Italy for pre-season and, at the airport, said he had “just arrived” before declining to send a message to supporters. According to Sunderland Echo, Régis Le Bris is seeking to bolster the right side of his attack.
What began as a tentative enquiry now appears to have developed. Soulé’s agent, Martin Guastadisegno, is reported to have travelled to England for talks with Sunderland and Fulham.
Roma are believed to want around €35million, roughly £30million. His remaining book value is reportedly about €15.5million, so a sale at the asking price would secure a notable profit.
An approach from Sunderland is said to be “seriously considered” by Soulé, who is understood to be attracted by the Premier League. Europa League football is also on offer after Sunderland finished seventh last season, though Fulham and others could compete.
Soulé joined Roma from Juventus two summers ago for an initial €26million, about £22million, after they beat Leicester City to his signature. He made 41 appearances last season, with seven goals and eight assists, as Roma sealed a Champions League return. Sunderland transfer chief Florent Ghisolfi previously helped bring him to Roma, which could aid any move.
