Matias Soulé has offered a seven-word update on his Roma future, telling reporters, “Will I stay? Honestly, I don’t know.” The Argentine spoke after landing in Italy for pre-season amid renewed Premier League links.
According to Sunderland Echo, Sunderland are exploring an ambitious move as Régis Le Bris seeks to bolster the right flank. An initially tentative enquiry is said to have progressed, with agent Martin Guastadisegno reported to have travelled to England for meetings with Sunderland and Fulham.
Roma are understood to value the 23-year-old at about €35million, roughly £30million. His book value is reportedly near €15.5million, so a sale at the asking price would generate a sizeable profit.
Separate reports suggest an approach from Sunderland would be seriously considered by Soulé, who is attracted by the chance to play in the Premier League. Sunderland can also offer Europa League football after finishing seventh last season, though Fulham and others could rival any bid.
Soulé joined Roma from Juventus two summers ago for an initial €26million, around £22million, after interest from Leicester City. He made 41 appearances last season, scoring seven goals and providing eight assists as Roma returned to the Champions League.
Sunderland sporting lead Florent Ghisolfi previously worked on the deal that took Soulé to Roma, a link that could help if the Wearside club decide to press their interest. On arrival, Soulé said he had only just arrived and declined to send a message to Roma supporters.
