Sunderland are assessing attacking options and have looked at Roma playmaker Matias Soulé, though interest is at a very early stage. Crystal Palace are also said to be closing in on Oscar Mingueza despite attention from Sunderland and Newcastle.
Sunderland Echo reports that the Black Cats’ approach amounts to a timid investigation, with no negotiations for the 22-year-old. Soulé currently has little intention of considering offers, though the situation could shift later in the window if Roma recruit in his role.
For now that leaves Sunderland watching rather than advancing a deal. The club remain active as they prepare for a Premier League and European campaign under Régis Le Bris.
Soulé joined Roma from Juventus last summer after a productive loan at Frosinone. A technically gifted left-footed attacker, he is regarded as one of Serie A’s most exciting young talents.
Sunderland’s recruitment has prioritised young, high-upside players, though any move for Soulé looks complicated by his stance and Roma’s position. Meanwhile, Spain international Mingueza, linked with Sunderland, Newcastle United, Arsenal, Aston Villa, Everton and Fulham, is said to be heading to Crystal Palace on a free transfer after talks with several clubs.
