Sunderland are close to agreeing a new long-term contract with goalkeeper Matty Young, Sunderland Echo understands. Talks are advanced and the mood is positive.
Most terms are understood to be verbally in place, with a proposed four-year deal plus a 12-month option. It is not complete and nothing is done until signed.
The club are moving to secure a leading academy product under sporting director Florent Ghisolfi. Young, 19, joined aged seven and signed his first professional deal in November 2023.
He shone at Darlington, winning their young player award, before two seasons on loan with Salford City. He has made 75 league appearances for the League Two club and 89 senior games in all competitions.
Capped by England at under-19, under-20 and under-21 levels, Young is not expected to return to Salford next season. A bigger club, fanbase and stadium are viewed as the logical next step, with Plymouth Argyle understood to be keen.
Cardiff City and MK Dons have also been linked. Robin Roefs is established as Sunderland’s number one, Anthony Patterson is weighing up his future amid interest, and Melker Ellborg is part of the senior group. The new deal would reflect Sunderland’s long-term plan, with another loan likely in the short term.
