Kylian Mbappé condemned racist remarks by Paraguayan senator Celeste Amarilla on Monday after France beat Paraguay 1-0 in the World Cup last 16. The French Football Federation also denounced the attacks, saying it had reported the matter to the public prosecutor.
Mbappé settled the tie with a second-half penalty. According to Le Progres, the match was marked by numerous fouls and gamesmanship by Paraguay.
In a post on X, the France captain called Amarilla despicable and unfit for office, said she did not represent Paraguay and argued that her racism had overshadowed the team’s historic effort. He added that he would not let people like her spread hatred and racism worldwide.
Sports minister Marina Ferrari said she was scandalised, branding the remarks abject and racist, and insisted France condemns them with the greatest firmness. She said the attacks on Mbappé struck at what the captain embodies and what the country defends.
Later in the evening, President Emmanuel Macron voiced support for Mbappé and the team, with the French presidency noting that Paraguay’s president had written to him and that the foreign ministry had condemned the remarks. Paraguay’s government also issued a statement rejecting Amarilla’s comments as contrary to its values and saying they do not represent the government or the Paraguayan people.
