Mbekezeli Mbokazi outlines Chippa United's next plan to strengthen the team!
Anchored at the foot of the Betway Premiership table, Chippa United finds itself in a familiar, grim battle for top-flight survival. With a meager seven points from 13 matches, the Gqeberha-based club has endured a turbulent start to the 2025/26 season, a period marked by instability that has seen four different coaches—Sinethemba Badela, Musa Nyatama, Luc Eymael, and now Vusumuzi Vilakazi—take the helm.
Yet, despite the precarious position, the newly appointed head coach, Vusumuzi Vilakazi, is projecting a surprising calm, especially concerning the upcoming January transfer window. Following a 2-0 defeat to Orlando Pirates, Vilakazi outlined a strategy of stability over a squad overhaul.
In a climate where struggling clubs often panic-buy, Vilakazi’s approach is one of calculated confidence. He believes the key to salvation lies not in new signings, but in the players already at his disposal.
“I’m not worried about the window. When I took the assignment, I knew what I was doing in terms of understanding the players,” Vilakazi stated, drawing on his existing relationships within the squad. “Fortunately, half of the team here at Chippa, I’ve worked with them before, so I’m confident enough with the squad that we have, we can still survive.”
His vision for the club extends beyond the immediate crisis, but for now, the focus is singular: avoid relegation. He expressed contentment with his current roster, suggesting the transfer window might be used for streamlining rather than strengthening.
“Obviously, when we’re talking about next season and setting targets, that will be a different story, so that we don’t fight relegation. But for now, I’m still happy and comfortable with the players we have,” he explained.
He concluded with a clear directive for the club's January activities, adding, “Maybe the window might be there for us to release a few players, but I’m not concerned about signing players, getting experienced players, or something like that.” For Vilakazi and Chippa United, the fight for survival will be waged with the weapons they already have.
