Michael Carrick’s time in interim charge of Manchester United got even better with today’s win over Fulham.
The victory, secured in classic Old Trafford style with an injury time winner from Benjamin Sesko, makes it three wins in three games for Carrick.
When asked if today’s thriller was a throwback to the United of old, a smiling Carrick described Old Trafford as “a special place” which “does special things”.
He continued: “We knew today was going to be a really tough game. There have questions all week about breaking down a low block and beating teams that you should beat, and that was never the case today.
“Fulham are a really good, good team and we knew that we were going to have a lot of questions to answer,” he said.
United beat Arsenal last week thanks to a late winner but today’s came even later and was supplied by under-fire striker Sesko. Carrick credited his whole team for the performance but singled out the goalscorer.
“I’m just so delighted for him,” he said “He totally deserves it. It’s a huge moment for all of us but for him especially and he deserves it. He’s been fantastic since I came here and he’ll remember that feeling for quite some time.”
Asked if he enjoyed this goal the most, Carrick said late winners in front of the Stretford End are “what you get greedy for; you want more of that feeling.”
He continued: “For Ben to get that I think that’ll do him so much good. The response when he came into the changing room at the end, we’re all pleased for him.”
Describing today’s game, Carrick said: “The last goal was a big, big moment and the celebrations were big.
“That’s what the game does to us and that’s why we’re in it and we love it. I think the disappointment to then the elation, and seeing everyone in that moment with the subs running down the touch line and jumping on Ben, the staff, the supporters – it’s special they’re the [moments] that we want more of.”
Carrick refused to get carried away but made the exciting claim that “there’s a lot more to come from us in in different aspects of the game.”
He explained: “we’ve been together three weeks and we’re working on things and trying to improve things. Today was about getting through it in what way we needed to do and finding a way.
“That’s three in a row, that’s good [but] we want more for sure. Hopefully we can win games a little bit more comfortably, but when they do come like that, it feels like more than just a win and that feeling spreads through so many people.
“It’s got to be exciting. We want people to come with that passion, looking for something to happen and to be excited by it. We didn’t envision it happening just like that, but the supporters have come, gone home happy and are looking forward to the next one.”
