Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick has explained why Tyrell Malacia could play a key role in the season run-in. Meanwhile, the left-back is continuing his return to first-team action.

In an official club report, Carrick said Malacia is “chomping at the bit” to get back to playing regularly after a long spell away from the pitch.

The Dutchman’s most notable involvement so far was on Boxing Day. He came off the bench to help United see out a 1-0 win over Newcastle United at Old Trafford.

The cameo was the 26-year-old’s first senior appearance for the club since January 2025. His previous outing was when he started a Europa League tie away to FCSB.

The report adds that the former Feyenoord man had previously been reintroduced to matchday squads in October. He is working his way back to full fitness now.

He was also named among the substitutes in last weekend’s 3-2 victory over Fulham. It marked another step in his steady reintegration.

Carrick’s comments suggest the Netherlands international has been kept close to the group. The defender has been included in the head coach’s matchday squad for each of his first three games in charge, after all.

Emphasis on squad stability

The United boss underscored how every player must be ready for the remainder of the campaign now that the January transfer window has closed.

Carrick stressed that squad depth will matter across the final stretch, too. With 14 games still to play, he expects specific players to contribute at certain moments.

He reiterated the importance of structure and routine as well, saying the group is now settled. Carrick added that the focus must be on pushing forward together.

United are preparing to host Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford on Saturday in the Premier League. Carrick’s message, therefore, arrives just as the squad is looking to build momentum towards the run-in.

Togetherness after Fulham win

The club report also notes how much Carrick values unity within the squad. He underlined its importance, particularly during key points in matches.

He referenced the scenes after Benjamin Sesko’s dramatic late winner against Fulham, remarking that the substitutes’ celebrations showcased a sign of genuine harmony and cohesion.

Carrick said those reactions cannot be manufactured. He described them as the kind of feelings United want to create more often.

For Malacia, the pathway back looks clear now that he is consistently making matchday squads again. He is, however, pushing to turn cameos into meaningful minutes.

If Carrick has good selection headaches in the coming weeks, United’s run-in could be strengthened by the return of players who have shown they can contribute when called upon.

In summary, the head coach has suggested every member of the squad will have a role to play between now and the end of the season.
