Spanish coach Michel has been appointed Ajax Amsterdam head coach on a two-season deal. The club said in a statement on Tuesday evening that the contract runs to 30 June 2028.
It comes days after he left Girona at the end of May following relegation to Liga 2. The move marks a quick return to a top job abroad.
The 50-year-old previously led Rayo Vallecano and SD Huesca, then guided Girona to fourth in La Liga in 2024. He was out of contract at Girona.
Ajax technical director Jordi Cruyff described him as ambitious and demanding, and expressed confidence he will imprint his vision and rigorous methods on the team.
Michel said he was delighted and proud to take this next step, describing Ajax as a European giant renowned for developing young talent. He set the aim of restoring the club to where it belongs, adding that he is confident they can achieve it.
He replaces Oscar Garcia, appointed in March after interim coach Fred Grim, who had followed John Heitinga, sacked after 128 days on six November. Ajax finished fifth in the Eredivisie this season, 28 points behind PSV Eindhoven.
