Míchel Sánchez has been appointed Ajax head coach on a contract running to 2028, the Amsterdam club said in a statement. He takes charge at the Johan Cruyff Arena after ending a five-year spell at Girona.

His work in Girona made him one of the most attractive coaches in European football, steering the club into the Champions League. They went toe to toe with Barcelona and Real Madrid with a vibrant, dynamic and attacking style that drew attention beyond La Liga.

Even so, his farewell was bitter. With about 10 league matches remaining, survival looked within reach, yet Girona failed to win any of their final eight and were relegated at home to Elche.

He now begins a new adventure in Amsterdam, aiming to imprint his football on the Eredivisie. After two draining seasons, he was keen to seek fresh challenges, and Ajax offers a particularly enticing one.

Ajax are a sleeping giant, no longer in the elite European competition and no longer dominant domestically, having been overtaken by PSV Eindhoven and Feyenoord. In philosophy they are a strong match, with demands for victories, identity and player development that align with Míchel.

The task is immediate. He must adapt to a different league and help build a squad with a strong homegrown core, capable of competing again in the Netherlands and in Europe. His outlook appears consistent with the club’s history.
