Milan are confident to have reached a breakthrough in the talks with Mike Maignan after upping their proposal. They recently met with his representatives, and the talks will continue to finalize the agreement in short order, Gianluca Di Marzio reports.

The Rossoneri have offered €5.7M per year plus bonuses, which would put the goalie on par with Rafael Leao as the highest-paid player in their squad. Some of the add-ons would be easy to trigger, so the star would be able to pocket about €7M annually.

Maignan had made up his mind about leaving Milan last summer, and Chelsea lodged a bid to lure him, but Massimiliano Allegri convinced the brass to turn it down and the shot-stopper to stay and focus on the ongoing season, delaying the matter.

Director Igli Tare recently stated that the parties had decided not to put pressure on each other while the team was fighting for lofty goals. The goalie can technically already sign a pre-contract with another club, having entered the final six months of his deal. The Blues and Juventus have been mentioned as the likeliest landing spots, should he opt to flee.

Our Take on Milan and Maignan

Their management has been quick to address the chatter when it intensified, and we’ll see whether that’s the case again. While the official who caused the initial problem, trying to change the terms midstream, is still there, he’s dealing with two new influential figures now, Allegri and Tare, which could be enough for a 180. Then, like a few other Serie A franchises, they have a pretty standard cap on their salaries that a few Premier League sides would easily be able to smash.
