Rangers have finally parted ways with Russell Martin after a disastrous 123-day spell. But they are struggling to find his successor, with Steven Gerrard and Danny Rohl withdrawing interest. U19 coach Steven Smith is overseeing first-team training, and will lead their Saturday afternoon encounter against Dundee United.

While the Gers are stuck at the bottom half of the Premiership standings, the Tangerines are going strong with 9 points in 7 outings. The Glasgow giants clinched back-to-back 3-1 wins earlier this year; however, their Ibrox meeting last November ended in a 1-1 draw, thanks to Vaclav Cerny, who salvaged a point by netting a second-half equaliser. The depleted Light Blues would bank on the home crowd to grind out a result this time around.

Defence

Despite Martin’s dismissal, Jack Butland is expected to retain his ‘number 1′ status. The veteran Englishman has revived his form after a disappointing end to the 2024-25 season, and his presence between the sticks should offer stability and balance against the visitors’ attacking threats.

An adjustment was made in the defensive third against Falkirk when Derek Cornelius was deployed from the left. But the Canadian should be restored as a centre-half alongside John Souttar. Nasser Djiga could be dropped in favour of Jayden Meghoma, who has impressed as a left fullback since completing a season-long loan from Brentford. Skipper James Tavernier must feature from the right ahead of Max Aarons.

Midfield

Nicolas Raskin has been exquisite for Belgium with his all-round traits, and the midfield ace must orchestrate the game from the deep as he has done so far for the Red Devils. Mohamed Diomande would be a better fit as the ‘double pivot’ over Joe Rothwell or Connor Barron. Kieran Dowell, Nedim Bajrami and Lyall Cameron need to stay patient and wait for their opportunities in the centre of the pitch.

Thelo Aasgaard has primarily operated from the right-hand side of Norway’s three-man midfield set-up. But his creative spark must be utilised from the ‘number 10’ spot, even though the Norwegian has struggled since completing a summer move from Luton Town. Rangers are highly reliant on Djeidi Gassama down the left, whereas Oliver Antman and Mikey Moore are still battling out for the starting role on the other flank. The latter, on loan from Tottenham Hotspur, netted a hat-trick for England U19s against Belgium earlier this week, and therefore, should get the nod this weekend.

Attack

Bojan Miovski has netted twice since plying his trade in Glasgow from Girona, and the North Macedonian ‘number 9’ might keep his place up top ahead of Youssef Chermiti and Danilo.
