Newcastle United chief executive David Hopkinson is reported to have sent an emergency video address to staff after the Tyne-Wear derby defeat, aiming to steady nerves on Tyneside. The Times reports he contacted more than 500 employees soon after full-time at St James’s Park.
Newcastle led through Anthony Gordon before Chemsdine Talbi levelled, then Brian Brobbey struck in stoppage time to complete Sunderland’s comeback. The final whistle brought audible frustration from the home support.
In the internal message, Hopkinson accepted the hurt and framed the setback as a test of character. He referenced Vince Lombardi’s idea that recovery matters more than the fall, adding the club would take a tough day then get back up.
He said Newcastle are building something real, that progress is not a straight line, and while the defeat felt heavy it would not be carried for long. He stressed enthusiasm and conviction would remain undiminished.
On Wearside, the reaction has underlined the scale of the win, which moved Sunderland above their rivals in the Premier League. For a newly promoted side, it marked a notable step.
The tone of Hopkinson’s address reflected a club seeking to regroup after a difficult result, with scrutiny also rising around head coach Eddie Howe following back-to-back derby defeats. Sunderland’s focus is on performance and progress under Régis Le Bris, with safety already secured and seven league games remaining.
