Sunday started with a very lengthy statement put out by Yoane Wissa via his social media, begging Brentford to honour the written promises he says they have made, to allow him to leave for Newcastle United before the end of this summer 2025 transfer window.
Sunday ended with universal reporting that Liverpool had agreed (see below) to pay a new record transfer fee (Real Sociedad set to bank around £7m of it due to a sell-on clause) by am English club, with Alexander Isak set to have his medical on Monday before completing his move to Anfield.
Yoane Wissa has been with the Bees for four years and has stated previously that when he agreed to stay at Brentford in summer 2024, the West London club then promised he could leave in summer 2025 if the striker chose to do so.
Monday morning has now brought news from Craig Hope at The Mail that Isak’s late sale means Newcastle United have now stepped up further their efforts to add another striker, on top of the £69.3m arrival of Nick Woltemade.
The man from The Mail says that Yoane Wissa is more likely to be signed by Newcastle United than Jorgen Strand Larsen. With Wolves said to have told the Norway international he can’t move to Newcastle this transfer window and the 25 year old accepting that.
Hope says that Newcastle United are now negotiating on a transfer fee for Yoane Wissa with Brentford but that there is work to do still before closing a deal.
Obviously only Brentford and Yoane Wissa (and his representatives) know the exact wording of the written assurances that were made to the striker, that he would be allowed to leave this summer.
However, the main sticking point would appear to be what constitutes a ‘reasonable’ offer. Which is of course why on the continent the vast majority of top players have an exact figure as a transfer release clause figure.
Newcastle United offered an initial £25m and then increased that to a £40m deal, both of which were rejected.
It has been reported that Brentford are wanting £65m for Yoane Wissa, who has only one year left on his contract (an unknown whether or not there is an extra year Brentford can trigger) and turns 29 on Wednesday.
With the striker desperate to move to Newcastle United and not having been included in any of Brentford’s matchday squads so far, there surely is room for the two clubs to come to some kind of compromise transfer fee.
