Insiders have dismissed recent rumours about Anthony Gordon potentially moving to the Emirates Stadium. Former Manchester United chief scout Mick Brown tells Football Insider that Arsenal will almost certainly pass on the chance to sign the Newcastle United winger. This holds true even if the Magpies decide to let him go.
Brown says Mikel Arteta is perfectly happy with the wingers he already has. He points to the strong lineup of Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli, and Noni Madueke. So, the North London club see a move for Gordon as a financial risk they don’t need to take.
Brown backs up his view by comparing Gordon directly to the options already at Arteta’s disposal. He admits that Gordon is a direct, attacking threat, much like the current Arsenal forwards. Still, he believes the existing squad provides better options overall. The report also mentions Leandro Trossard as a solid backup.
This confirms that Arsenal’s wings are already full. The scout’s take on Gordon’s recent form is pretty blunt. He suggests the 24-year-old hasn’t shown the consistent performance needed for a team at the very top. So, despite the old links between the two sides, Arsenal will likely spend their money elsewhere. That leaves Gordon to figure out his future at St. James’s Park without a life raft from North London.
“Gordon has been linked to Arsenal in the past. But if he continues like this, the likes of Liverpool and Arsenal, for example, won’t be interested. He shares some qualities with Madueke; he’s very direct, wants to get into attacking areas and to get at people, but if you offered me both, I would take Madueke.
“For Arsenal, it seems Arteta is happy with the options he’s got out wide at the moment. Madueke, Saka and Martinelli are three very good options, and then you’ve got the likes of Trossard to come in there too, so it’s not a priority. They would be taking a risk signing Gordon, because he’s not showing at the moment that he should be playing at the very highest level.
“Plus, it would be an expensive deal for the risk you’d be taking. They’ll weigh up the pros and cons, but ultimately I think it’s unlikely.”

This situation leaves Newcastle United in a tight spot with one of their most valuable players. Gordon’s form has clearly hit a wall. Even so, he’s still worth a lot on the market because he’s young and homegrown. The Magpies now face a tough call. They either need to get the player back on track right away or cash in before his price tag drops.
Eddie Howe has a big job to do here. The manager has to find a way to bring back Gordon’s confidence, which has gone missing lately. The English winger needs to start running at defenders and scoring again. If he doesn’t, he becomes a luxury Newcastle can’t afford to keep around.
From a money perspective, the club might see a summer sale as the smartest move. Selling Gordon could provide the cash to fix other parts of the team. That’s a priority if they want to stay in European football. But keeping a player who isn’t motivated helps nobody.
The bosses at St. James’s Park need to get a straight answer from Gordon about his commitment. If he is second-guessing his long-term future on Tyneside, Newcastle should start listening to offers from other clubs. They need to do this even with Arsenal out of the picture. Moving fast will stop a long-winded saga from distracting the rest of the squad.
