Nilson Angulo has been called up by Ecuador for this summer’s World Cup after an impressive end to his debut half-season with Sunderland.
According to Sunderland Echo, the 22-year-old forward has 12 caps and this will be his first World Cup, to be staged in the US, Mexico and Canada.
Angulo arrived from Anderlecht for around £17.5 million late in the January window and was eased into Regis Le Bris’s plans. He made nine appearances, featuring in the final three, and started at Everton and at home to Chelsea as Sunderland secured Europa League football for next season.
Earlier in the campaign, Le Bris said he thought Angulo could make a success of his move to England. He underlined the need to adapt, praised the winger’s physicality, and noted a positive response after a tough game at Bournemouth.
The head coach also felt Angulo’s impact from the bench was encouraging at that stage, while starting regularly would come with time.
Ecuador’s selection also includes Moises Caicedo, Piero Hincapie and Enner Valencia.
