Nilson Angulo has been named in Ecuador’s World Cup squad after an eye-catching finish to his debut campaign with Sunderland.
According to Sunderland Echo, the 22-year-old, who has 12 international caps, will head to his first World Cup in the US, Mexico and Canada this summer.
Angulo joined from Anderlecht for around £17.5 million late in January and has been eased into Regis Le Bris’s plans. He made nine appearances, starting at Everton and at home to Chelsea, as Sunderland secured Europa League qualification.
Earlier in the season, Le Bris said he believed Angulo could make a success of his time in England. He praised the winger’s profile and physicality for the Premier League, while stressing adaptation after a tough outing at Bournemouth and noting that impact from the bench might suit him for now.
Angulo is one of Ecuador’s forwards, alongside Enner Valencia, Kevin Rodriguez, Jordy Caicedo, Anthony Valencia and Jeremy Arevalo. The squad also includes Moises Caicedo and Kendry Paez in midfield, with Piero Hincapie and Pervis Estupinan among the defenders.
