Just one year after his much-publicized move to Real Madrid, Trent Alexander-Arnold could be on the verge of leaving again. The England international’s situation is being closely monitored in Munich – and not without reason
The move from Anfield Road to the Santiago Bernabéu last summer was considered one of the most spectacular transfers of the year. After a full career at Liverpool FC, Trent Alexander-Arnold made a conscious decision to make a fresh start at Real Madrid. However, instead of sporting fulfilment, disillusionment has so far been the main result. Injuries have repeatedly set the 27-year-old back and he has been denied a regular starting place. The Whites have so far been unable to meet the expectations placed on the former Liverpool star
The situation is made even more explosive by the change of coach in Madrid. While Xabi Alonso had publicly emphasized how important Alexander-Arnold was for the future of the club, the tide seems to have turned completely under his successor Álvaro Arbeloa
As the Spanish portal El Nacional reports, Arbeloa is said to have already given the right-back an unmistakable signal that he will no longer play a role in the sporting plans for the coming season. The decision is therefore purely motivated by sporting considerations. Internally, Alexander-Arnold is not considered an ideal fit for the new coach’s system, and his defensive work in particular is said to be viewed critically
This would be a major setback for the Englishman. Real Madrid even paid Liverpool around ten million euros last summer to be able to bring him in early for the Club World Cup, although he would have been available on a free transfer a few weeks later. This makes the current development all the more surprising, as it shows how quickly the prospects in Madrid can change

A possible departure from Spain is also likely to be closely monitored by FC Bayern. According to kicker, the Munich club had already been keeping an eye on Alexander-Arnold around a year ago and were closely monitoring his contract situation at Liverpool. However, no concrete talks were held at the time, as the player had a clear preference for Real Madrid early on
Now the situation has changed. Bayern are known to be looking for a long-term solution for the right side of defence. The recurring absences and lack of consistency in this position have forced them to improvise time and again this season. A player of Alexander-Arnold’s calibre would undoubtedly fit the requirement profile in sporting terms – above all because of his quality as a player, his experience at the top level and his strength in building up play
However, there are considerable question marks. The Englishman is still under contract in Madrid until 2031 and is one of the absolute top earners. However, if Real really do want to make a quick exit, an unusual window could open. A loan deal or a transfer on significantly reduced terms would at least be conceivable in this scenario
Despite his quality, Alexander-Arnold would not be a sure-fire success for FC Bayern. His susceptibility to injury, defensive stability and, above all, his salary would have to fit into an already sensitively balanced squad structure. At the same time, it is clear that players of this calibre rarely become available – especially not at the age of 27
It remains to be seen whether Real Madrid will actually pull the ripcord, but the mere fact that such a prominent new signing is up for grabs again after just a few months is attracting attention across Europe. Munich are likely to be keeping a close eye on the situation. Whether this becomes more than just loose thoughts will depend above all on how serious Real really are about the announced change.
