On Instagram, Bayern Munich midfielder Leon Goretzka has announced that he will leave the club at the end of the season upon the expiry of his contract.

Dear fans, the last few days have been more turbulent than expected. At the same time, they’ve brought clarity: As much as I’m honored by the interest from top international clubs, I’ve made a clear decision that I want to stay with FC Bayern until the end of the season. With a team that’s incredibly fun to be around, both on and off the pitch, and a coach who has molded our squad back into a true unit. I feel a deep commitment to this team and the club. Our shared goal is to be back at Marienplatz in May, celebrating the biggest titles together with YOU! At the same time, the club and I have decided, after good and constructive discussions, that our successful time together will come to an end this summer. As I’ve said before, it’s also the right time for me to start a new chapter: as a footballer and as a person. But there’s still a lot to do before then. Goretzka’s departure will bring to an end a successful eight years at the club, where he played a key role in winning six Bundesliga titles (it will be seven by the end of the year) and, most importantly, the sextuple in 2020.

Since joining Schalke in 2018, the midfielder has (as of today) played 292 games, scoring 49 and assisting 48. However, in recent seasons, he has lost his place in the Bayern midfield in place of Aleksander Pavlovic.

Could Goretzka leave Bayern in this window?

In the past few days, Goretzka has been linked with a move to Atletico Madrid in this window. However, his announcement that he will leave Bayern at the end of the window means he has turned down the opportunity to move to the Spanish capital.

However, he is now free to talk to other clubs about joining on a free transfer in the summer.
