One dead and 47 injured at Lima stadium gathering before Alianza Lima v Universitario derby | OneFootball

One person was killed and 47 were injured on Friday during a supporters’ gathering at a Lima stadium ahead of Alianza Lima v Universitario, with the cause still unknown.

According to L'Équipe, Peru’s health minister Juan Carlos Velasco told reporters he did not explain what had happened and said the injured included three minors.

He added that 39 people were taken to hospital and three were in a critical condition.

Initial talk of a stand collapse at the Alejandro Villanueva stadium was denied by Alianza Lima and the fire service.

The club, lamenting the death of a supporter, said in a post on X that it was not caused by falling walls or structural failures at the venue. A fire official said the south stand appeared in good condition and that nothing had fallen onto the pitch.

The derby will go ahead on Saturday at 20:00 local time, 03:00 in France on Sunday, at another stadium in Lima, the Peruvian league said.
