Manchester City denied Nico O’Reilly a deadline day move to Chelsea because they were fearful of another Cole Palmer situation according to reports.

The Transfer window closed on Monday night at 11pm, with the Blues making just one signing as Mathis Amougou joined from St Etienne in a deal worth £12.5m.

Chelsea sold Cesare Casadei to Torino, whilst Axel Disasi, Joao Felix, Carney Chukwuemeka, Ben Chilwell and Renato Veiga all left on loan.

Despite only making one signing the Blues were linked with a host of names throughout the window as they looked to strengthen in both attack and midfield.

Chelsea were linked with the likes of Mathys Tel, and it’s said they tried to hijack his move to Tottenham at the last minute, whilst there was also interest in Alejandro Garnacho and Liam Delap.

With the Blues unable to strengthen in attack they instead focused on midfield, where there’s been a lack of depth due to Romeo Lavia’s constant injury issues.

Chelsea opted against recalling one of Lesley Ugochukwu or Andrey Santos from loan, whilst they also enquired about Douglas Luiz.

Before settling on Amougou, Enzo Maresca’s side were linked with Sporting Lisbon midfielder Dario Essugo and they made an enquiry for O’Reilly.

City knocked back Chelsea’s enquiry for the 19-year-old, and The Sun have now reported the Premier League Champions  blocked his move to Stamford Bridge as they feared another “Palmer” situation.

Whether Chelsea go back in for O’Reilly down the line remains to be seen, with the teenager highly regarded at City, although he’s only made one appearance in the Premier League this season, despite City’s problems in midfield due to Rodri’s absence.

Amougou was officially announced by Chelsea on Tuesday, although reports have claimed he’s not expected to get many minutes over the second half of the season.
