Vangelis Pavlidis missed a second half penalty in Benfica's 2-0 win over Nacional, ending a run of 16 straight league conversions and stirring memories of Arthur Cabral. According to Playmaker, Cabral was the last Benfica player to fail from the spot in the Liga Portugal Betclic.
The Greek striker's effort in the 58th minute would have made it 3-0, but he failed to convert. The chance arrived with the game under control.
Cabral, now at Botafogo, was Benfica's previous league penalty miss in February 2025, during a 3-2 victory at Estrela da Amadora in Reboleira.
The failed kick also sharpened Pavlidis' current goal drought, with his last nine matches proving lean and causing concern among supporters.
This season the forward, valued at 32 million euros, has played 49 times for Benfica, 29 in Liga Portugal Betclic, 14 in the Champions League, three in the Taça de Portugal, two in the Taça da Liga and one in the Supertaça. Across 4,037 minutes he has scored 29 goals and supplied five assists.
