While reporting continues to circulate surrounding the future of Marc Guehi and interest from Manchester City, Pep Guardiola has issued doubt on the subject.
Speculation around City’s January plans has intensified in recent days following a series of reports suggesting growing confidence within the club over a potential move for the Crystal Palace captain.
Reports have been fuelled further by City’s ongoing defensive injury problems, with Pep Guardiola forced to reshuffle his back line and club figures assessing whether market intervention is required to stabilise the squad during the second half of the campaign.
However, Guardiola has consistently attempted to distance himself from transfer speculation during media duties, preferring to keep the focus on fixtures rather than recruitment. And that stance appeared unchanged despite the heightened noise around Guehi and the club.
Having formally completed and announced the signing of Antoine Semenyo from Bournemouth on Friday morning, attention has already turned to whether Manchester City could welcome more faces into their squad this month.
On the subject of any additional transfer business in January, Pep Guardiola told reports during a press conference on Friday, “I don’t know. I cannot answer that question.”
Guardiola’s response will inevitably be interpreted as a public attempt to cool expectations, rather than a definitive dismissal of further activity. Historically, the City manager has often played down transfer possibilities even when negotiations are advancing behind the scenes.
From a strategic perspective, City’s position remains delicate and the club are believed to be balancing immediate sporting needs with long-term squad planning, particularly given Marc Guehi’s age, Premier League experience, and suitability for Guardiola’s system.
Much may now depend on Crystal Palace’s willingness to negotiate and whether rival interest becomes concrete before the window closes. If Arsenal or another suitor formally enters the market this month, Manchester City could be forced to clarify their stance quickly.
