Southampton slipped to a 1-2 defeat at St Mary’s, their first home loss under Tonda Eckert, extending a seven-match winless run in the Championship. Pressure on the board increased.
According to Sainstmarching.com, Southampton passed up a fine early chance when Caspar Jander and Finn Azaz got in each other's way, Azaz hitting the side netting.
Hull punished a defensive lapse as Ryan Manning’s stray pass sent Oli McBurnie through, he returned the ball for Kyle Joseph to pick his spot and fire into the top left.
Just after the half-hour, a deep corner was not dealt with, Nathan Wood was outmuscled by Charlie Hughes and Daniel Peretz, the Israeli goalkeeper on debut, was caught in no man’s land as Hughes headed in. Home fans in the Northam End voiced anger at the board. It was 0-2 at the break.
Eckert withdrew Joshua Quarshie at the interval and switched to a back four. Hull sat in a low block, closing passing lanes, and Azaz struggled to influence. Adam Armstrong chased lost causes and found little space.
Southampton pulled one back when Léo Scienza delivered a devilish inswinging cross for Ross Stewart to finish from close range. That was as good as it got, with the hosts creating little thereafter. Léo Scienza was named man of the match.
